Vietnamese Football: From 'Miracle' to 'Equation' — Tactical and Refereeing Analysis Through the VAR Lens

There was a time when Vietnamese football was called by all of Asia with a proud name: 'miracle'. Triumphs at the U23 Asian Cup, AFF Cup, or ASIAD have elevated us to a new peak, where the romance of football is celebrated. But the ongoing regular season paints a different picture, one where 'miracle' has given way to complex 'equations'. With 25 years of following Vietnamese football, from my days as an assistant VAR at the 2026 AFC Cup, I realize that what we lack is not passion, but a sophisticated operational system capable of turning fleeting moments of brilliance into a solid foundation. Let's start with the numbers. In their last three V.League matches, top teams like Cong An Ha Noi or Ha Noi FC have shown a significant decrease in their PPDA (passes allowed per defensive action) index. This means they accept playing deeper, ceding the initiative to their opponents. But what caused this tactical shift? Not because they have weakened, but because they are solving a harder equation: the problem of fitness and a congested fixture schedule. Vietnamese players, despite their technical skills, face the harsh reality of overlapping schedules between club and national team duties. A player like Nguyen Van Truong, a young talent I have followed since 2026, is a clear testament to this physical exhaustion. Regarding refereeing, this season has witnessed more controversies than ever. I still remember that moment at 2 AM when I sat down to review the footage of a contentious incident in round 12. Vietnamese football lacks neither talent nor passion. What it lacks is a systemic mindset and the patience to build from the roots. A millimeter changes the fate of a team; I have learned to live with that. And I believe Vietnamese football also needs to learn to live with challenges to reach a new, more sustainable height.
