Saben Lee suffers thigh injury, Zalgiris Kaunas loses key guard before London tournament
Zalgiris Kaunas have received an unwelcome piece of news less than three weeks before the start of the Lithuanian Basketball League. Saben Lee, the guard signed during the summer, has suffered a thigh injury. The club announced he is expected to miss several weeks and will certainly skip the London tournament on September 10 and 11, where London Lions – a Zalgiris satellite team – are involved.
This is a significant blow, because Lee is expected to become an important piece in both the defensive system and the offensive structure. Losing a player in the final stretch of preseason is never easy. The question is not only when Lee returns, but how Tomas Masiulis' team will cope with his absence.
Zalgiris enter the 2026-26 season with a different look. Jonas Valančiūnas is the most striking signing, bringing an experienced NBA centre back to Lithuania. Carsen Edwards adds perimeter firepower, Marius Grigonis provides smart off-ball movement, and Sterling Brown adds versatile wing depth. Saben Lee was part of that highly rated group, but early injuries often disrupt long-term planning.
The schedule makes things even more sensitive. The Lithuanian league opener is on September 17 away to newly promoted Gargždai. Less than a week later, Zalgiris host Red Star Belgrade in their EuroLeague opener on September 24. On September 29 they travel to Athens to face Olympiacos in round two. If Lee misses only two weeks, he could still be available for Red Star. If the injury lasts longer than three weeks, Zalgiris may face two difficult EuroLeague games without their lead guard.
Lee's ability to attack the rim and defend both guard positions is crucial. Modern basketball values guards who can stretch defences, and Lee brings that dimension. But data suggests players with explosive movement are more likely to suffer a recurrence if rushed back. The numbers do not lie, but the ones who choose the numbers can. A return date announced too early should always be treated with caution. I once thought I was right because the numbers were on my side. But there are variables outside the box score, and injuries are among them.
London was supposed to be a testing ground for new rotations and new tactics. Lee's absence takes away the chance to evaluate him in real competition. Everything will be limited to practice and simulation, and there is always a gap between those two. The coaching staff must build a backup plan now, not after the regular season begins.
From a more optimistic perspective, this is not yet a disaster. Zalgiris have a deeper roster than in recent seasons. Carsen Edwards can handle more ball duties, Marius Grigonis can benefit from smaller actions, and Sterling Brown has enough experience to ease the pressure on the backcourt. The issue is not a lack of options, but a lack of chemistry among new faces.
This is where the real challenge lies. Transfers are not arithmetic; they are a negotiation between people and numbers. A team may have many quality names, but without enough time to understand each other, each contract's actual value is reduced. Lee's absence delays his integration, and Zalgiris may pay for that with small mistakes in the opening weeks.
The medical staff will certainly be conservative. Further imaging, pain monitoring and reaction tests will determine the exact return date. But fans should watch how Zalgiris handle the situation. Will they rush Lee back for Red Star? If yes, the risk of recurrence increases. New metrics are not born in offices, but in crisis situations. This is when the hardest decisions are tested.
Zalgiris have often proven they can overcome adversity. But this season their ambitions are higher, and every EuroLeague game matters. Losing Lee early may affect stability, but it also gives others a chance to step up. The big question is not when Lee returns, but what Zalgiris look like without him. When the arena is empty, only data whispers the truth. At this moment, that truth is in the treatment room, and any number can change at the last second.
