 Our Battle Flag

Our Battle Flag
By Lynette Jones (nee Magarry)

It was only a piece of dirty cloth,
They carried proud and true.
It went with them everywhere
What pride and care it knew.
It was only a piece of dirty cloth,
But to those men of W.W.II
It was the honour, pride and hope
Of all the dreams they knew.

It was only a piece of dirty cloth,
Its colours now, rather pale
It wasn't always on display -
There were times when it was concealed away,
But still loved and cared for
By those men brave and true.
Their trusted friend in times of strife
When its discovery they knew would mean their life.

It was only a piece of dirty cloth, purple over blue,
Oh, what stories it could tell
If it could talk to you -
If cruelty, of bravery, of love so straight and true,
Of hardships, companionship and hopes
For a future bright and free.
Of sorrow and thankfulness
To those young men so supreme
who gave their futures and their youth
So we could all be free.

It was only a piece of dirty cloth,
That they reverently laid to rest
Weary from the "mud, blood, guts, sweat and tears"
Of the men that were the 2/26th

It was only a piece of dirty cloth,
But please believe - it's true
We will now look after it
With the reverence that it's due
As a memorial to all the blokes
Who faced the atrocities of war.

A remembrance - just in case we should forget,
The price they paid - so dear
Their lives, their freedom and their youth
It's all remembered there -
It's only a piece of dirty cloth,
Its colours pale but true - purple over blue.
